List of Moons

The Exomoons catalogue, listing weather conditions

Weather refers to a multitude of extra conditions that could be affecting any moon, usually adding additional challenges and hazards to the outdoor area of the given moon the Employee landed on. The weather randomly changes on each planet every time a day passes in-game.

The Exomoons catalogue, accessed through the ship's terminal, lists both the moon name and the weather forecast for each moon.

Inexperienced crews may want to avoid moons that are experiencing inclement weather, such as stormy moons, or flooded moons (however weather has no influence on a moon's scrap amount or value).

The first-day weather cycle is always the same.

Weather Types[]

  • Clear
  • Rainy
  • DustClouds
  • Stormy
  • Foggy
  • Flooded
  • Eclipsed
  • Meteor Shower

Weather conditions[]

Rainy[]

A rainy moon has dark patches of quicksand outside, posing a swift and lethal threat to unperceptive employees. Affected crew mates are slowed down and completely sink in a matter of a few seconds. It is possible for them to escape the quicksand if they get out quickly enough. A quicksand patch looks a bit like a large puddle of darkened dirt on the ground. At night, it can be quite hard to spot.

61-March, 41-Experimentation, and 20-Adamance spawn permanent quicksand patches on the ground.

Strategy: just walk backwards. There is an audio cue that you enter mud, so walking backwards when it is heard can save you.

Stormy[]

During stormy weather, conductive items that are outdoors can build in electric charge, leading to them being struck by lightning after a few moments. An item that's building charge makes a buzzing sound and begins to arc. If held, a crew mate can immediately drop the sparking item and takes some distance from it to survive the strike. Otherwise, lightning strikes are powerfully fatal.

Lightning may strike a conductive object multiple times in quick succession. Crew mates who wait an extra moment before picking their items back up are less likely to be hit by secondary lightning strikes.

If a conductive item is under cover such as the roof of the autopilot ship, lightning will tend to strike the roof instead. This sometimes works for overhangs and close to walls, but not reliably.[1] If lightning strikes the ship, the ship's lights and monitor turn off and can be turned back on.

Conductive equipment ordered while on a stormy moon will not attract lightning for the duration of the day it was bought on.

Strategy: If possible, limit the amount of conductive loot brought back at once, that way you only need to drop 1 item instead of all.

Foggy[]

A foggy moon's exterior becomes difficult to navigate due to a thick fog. It becomes hard to see more than a few meters ahead of ones' self. Entities who are unable to see through fog cannot see more than 30 units (23 m). (As of Version 49, this is all outdoor entities.)

Memorizing ways to get around each moon's landing area is crucial to not getting lost. With someone on the ship, the loud horn ship upgrade or ordering items for delivery can help lost crew mates find their way back, as can activating the teleporter. A budget alternative to the loud horn is a scrap airhorn, although they can't be heard from as far away and will also attract eyeless dogs to the holder. If lost crew mates are in radio communication with someone in the ship (either by Walkie-talkie or signal translator), they can be directed back using the corner arrow on the main monitor. The Echo Scanner can also help when a lost crew mate comes within 50 m of the ship or the main entrance.

85-Rend, 7-Dine and 8-Titan are in perpetual blizzard, so sight conditions are already poor on those moons. Of these, only titan can be foggy.

Strategy: Familiarize yourself with the moon. Know its layout, where to walk, where to not. Eyesight is only needed to gather info of your surroundings, so if you have enough previously gathered, there's no need.

Flooded[]

A flooded moon has rising water, cutting off critical areas and making it increasingly impossible to traverse the lowlands and eventually most of the landing area. Crews should return to their autopilot ship sooner and also keep safe routes back to the ship in mind.

Wading through flooded terrain slows crew mates down considerably, draining their stamina and making them unable to run. They can regenerate stamina by standing still. Crew mates will drown if they're fully underwater for enough time.

Flooding starts low on most moons and gets progressively worse as time goes on. Maximum flooding tends to be around 5:00 p.m., but it may vary across moons, and building entrances can become inundated earlier than that. Rend, Titan and Embrion can not be flooded.

In v50, flooded moons are now reversed on Adamance And Dine. The water will start high and decreases over time.

Strategy: Stick to routes that are elevated above the ground, and if the whole planet is submerged, just be careful to avoid staying under too long.

Eclipsed[]

An eclipsed moon has greatly heightened danger from entities. Outdoor entities can come out immediately, and the base number of indoor entities starts as if it was already night, potentially subjecting an entire crew to incredibly dangerous working conditions. To avoid the risk of losing a worker at the mission's outset or at worst wasting an entire day and losing all collected scrap, it is crucial for inexperienced crews to steer clear of eclipsed moons.

Each moon has a set amount of entities that will initially spawn while eclipsed.

Entities at start of day (8:00 a.m.)
Moon Outdoor entities Indoor entities
41-Experimentation 1 1
220-Assurance 1 1
56-Vow 1 1
21-Offense 4 4
61-March 2 2
85-Rend ? ?
7-Dine ? ?
8-Titan ? ?

Strategy:

  • A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, so having an experienced crew that can communicate well with each other can help nullify the threat of this weather. Having one player man the ship can greatly reduce the danger of losing all items. Consider setting up a barricade at the front of the ship, this way eyeless dogs cannot get inside while in their roaming phase. Additionally, purchasing a cheap item prior to landing can distract any that spawned while your crew enters the facility.
  • Boomboxs can attract multiple dogs so you dont have to deal them on the way back.
  • the strat for killing a giant with a knife could work with dealing with a giant.

Meteor Shower[]

The meteor shower is a random event which affects a moon's surface. Unlike normal weather, the shower has a small chance to begin at any time during the day, and lasts 12 in-game hours or about 8:30 real-time.

When a meteor shower is imminent, an EAS-style weather bulletin appears on the HUD.

Meteors will appear as entry fireballs far above the surface, falling to the surface in "waves". They are relatively slow-moving and can be outran by any employee paying attention to what's overhead.

A meteor will pass through water and trees, destroying the latter, and explode upon impact with the ground. Anything standing in that spot[verify] will die, and any nearby employees will be flung back without taking damage.

It will leave no crater or meteorite after impact, only a char decal.

The meteor shower can occur no matter what weather is already playing.[2]

Weather Values[]

At the start of each day, the weather on every moon is determined by an algorithm.

Firstly, the game decides how many moons will be affected by weather. This value is being evaluated from a curve with a random input value between 0 and 1. If the following criteria are met, the evaluated value is then multiplied by a random number between 1.5 and 2.5.

  • The crew consists of at least 2 employees (multiplayer)
  • The amount of days all employees survived in a row without dying is a multiple of 3 (at least 3 days)

Note: The evaluated value is converted to an integer and clamped between 0 and the amount of moons, which means that if the value is above 8, all moons will be affected by weather.

For every moon that has been selected, a random index in the list of the moon's possible weathers then determines the type of weather the moon will have on that day.

Weather re-roll exploit (patched as of v50)[]

In the previous version of the game, it is possible to re-roll the weather selection by visiting the company building, landing there and immediately taking off again followed by quitting the game via Alt+F4 and relaunching the session. This way, no days are lost but the weather choices will be re-calculated[3].
