Eyeless Dogs, also known as just Dogs, are large, canid entities in Lethal Company.
Bestiary[]
- Scientific name: Leo caecus
- A large mammal of the class Saeptivus. They are social, hunting in very large packs. They have also been called “breathing lions” for their recognizable sound and large mouths. They are endurance hunters and attempt to make up for their lack of sight with their sense of hearing. It's a popular myth that they often mistake the sounds of their own kind for prey, entering fights within their own packs.
- Their behaviour is unique from other pack animals in their tendency to spread out far to cover distance. When an eyeless dog has found prey, it roars to alert others in the near vicinity, who will also sound the alarm, sometimes resulting in a kind of chain reaction. Eyeless dogs can be dangerous in swarms. However, they are characteristically clumsy, taking guesses at their prey's exact location which are often incorrect.

Behavior[]
Eyeless dogs patrol the area slowly, checking locations and searching the planet’s surface. They can only kill players they contact. Sound alerts them, and they become suspicious if a sound is played near them. If loud enough, they instantly attack. Dogs remain suspicious until their “suspicion timer” expires, resetting during chasing and suspicious states. Making noise raises the timer by 3 or 4 seconds, depending on the state. If the timer exceeds a certain threshold, the dog chases. While chasing, it howls to alert nearby dogs. The dog accelerates and lunges when 4 meters from its last heard noise, releasing all speed. Lunging pauses the suspicion timer but adds noise if made. Lunging lasts 2.3 to 3.3 seconds, depending on speed. The dog slows and stops after the lunge. If it loses suspicion while chasing, it returns to being suspicious. If it loses suspicion while suspicious, it becomes calm.
Strategy[]
- When faced with an Eyeless Dog, avoid making any sound. This includes speaking, moving without crouching, and dropping items. Depending on microphone settings, you can whisper without alerting the dogs.
- Crouching suppresses the noise the player makes from walking, allowing players to avoid the Eyeless Dogs as long as they do not physically bump into them.
- Turning on and off your Flashlight, given the sound it produces, will alert Eyeless Dogs.
- Walkie-Talkies do not alert dogs even when being toggled (Note: If the walkie-talkie is already active and a player is speaking to you through it, the noise isn't heard.)
- Text chat can be safely used over the Walkie-Talkie near Eyeless Dogs. Having an active Walkie-Talkie in hand while texting will broadcast the message to other players with active Walkie-Talkies.
- Items listed below can also attract the attention of Eyeless Dogs:
- Active Boomboxes
- The store dropship
- Melee weapons
- Hitting a surface with a melee weapon will attract any nearby Eyeless Dogs.
- Scrap items that can actively make noise (Airhorns, Cash Registers, Clown horns, Hairdryers, and Whoopie-Cushions)
- Scrap items that passively make noise (Robot Toys, Rubber Duckies, and Teeth)
- The noise from a Teeth can only be heard by the Eyeless Dog if an Employee is holding it in their hands.
- Dropping some of these items, such as the Robot Toy, can silence them.
- Dropping items on the ground.
- The Loud horn on the ship.
- Pushing the Company Cruiser.
- Dashing away from their lunge path is the best way to avoid instant death if the roar has already been heard.
- High elevated surfaces such as boulders or the top of the ship are safe locations, as Eyeless Dogs can neither jump nor climb them.
- Keep in mind that after missing, they often lunge wildly a few more times before returning to their passive behavior.
- Lightning can be a powerful weapon against Eyeless Dogs, able to kill them in a single strike. Players can take advantage of their sensitivity to sound by luring them to dropped metallic objects. As the Eyeless dogs investigate the distraction, they’ll stand near the sparking items as lightning strikes it, resulting in their death. With enough time and good positioning, this technique can be used to exterminate an entire pack.
- Baboon Hawks are hostile to Eyeless Dogs. The two will often skirmish and kill each other. A lone Eyeless Dog will normally kill the Baboon Hawk, but a pack of Baboon Hawks can normally kill them. Luring one or the other to each other can serve as a distraction to the Eyeless Dogs and allow the player to slip away.
- Old Birds are hostile to Eyeless Dogs and will make quick work of them. Don't stick around long however as the Old Bird will quickly turn its attention to the player.
- When combined, the Zap Gun, Shovels, and effective team communication can make short work of Eyeless Dogs.
- Dogs will not hear noise when in a kill animation, meaning you can sacrifice teammates to get 5 seconds of that dog no longer being able to hear you.
- Ship furniture can NOT stop Eyeless Dogs from getting into the ship, even if positioned to fully block the door. Despite blocking player movement, Eyeless Dogs can walk through almost all furniture. Closing the door with the on-ship controls is the only way to temporarily keep them out.
- Eyeless Dogs cannot pass through the ship Terminal , though it is not big enough to block the entrance. It can, however, be placed at an angle to the left of the ship's monitor, leaving a small gap behind it where the player is safe.
- There are several strategies available should the Eyeless Dogs overrun the ship:
- Crouch in the corner of the ship and do not move or make any sound. This does not guarantee safety, especially if an Eyeless Dog misses its attack.
- If there are multiple players aboard the ship, leave and get on the roof. When doing so, be careful of any other entities that threaten you and other players, such as Old Birds, Forest Keepers, and Masked. Stay there until Eyeless Dogs have moved away from the ship.
- One player can leave the ship and make sound as to lure Eyeless Dogs away. Once distracted, the player outdoors can mount the outdoor ship railing, allowing other players entry to the ship so that they can close the door and take off as soon as possible.
- You still hit a dog while it pops out of the ships door upon being shut.
Notes[]
Hitbox of Eyeless Dog
- The Hitbox of the body consists of two hemispheres and a cylinder, with the circular planes of the two hemispheres connected to the two bottom surfaces of the cylinder. The Hitbox at the head is composed of a cube.
- Eyeless Dogs can climb the stairs of Titan.
- Baboon Hawks and Eyeless Dogs will fight in the rare circumstance they're both spawned in.
- Dogs do not actually instantly kill you when you touch them if they are in their "Calm" phase. They will begin chasing you, setting them to their "Chasing" Phase. However, this has no effect as you will most likely instantly die anyways, unless you are able to get out of the dog next collision tick.
Trivia[]
- The scientific name Leo Caecus roughly translates to "Blind Lion".
- Eyeless dogs are given a random pitch when spawning in; between
0.9
and1.1
. For whatever reason, they also have a 2/10 chance to spawn in with a significantly bigger pitch range, from0.6
to1.3
. This is useful as dogs also reset their pitch when killing a player; and are set between0.96
and1.04
, Meaning you are able to tell if a dog has killed one of your teammates depending on if it's pitch is close to the normal audio. - The design and function of Eyeless Dogs are reminiscent of SCP-939, a blind hunter that uses primarily uses air pressure to track targets (Although it is a common misconception that they see off of sound). A major difference is that the Eyeless Dogs are unable to mimic voices of slain prey to lure others, a hunting strategy that SCP-939 utilizes.
- In the recent V55 Trailer, an Eyeless Dog is shown sleeping. This may be just something added for the trailer, but there is a possibility Eyeless Dogs gain a sleeping mechanic, perhaps in earlier hours of the day.
